United Nations Head Office

Ateliers de la Peninsule was selected by the United Nations through an international design competition for the new United Nations Development Programme representative office in Vientiane. The challenge in this project was to deliver a 3,000 square meter office building in one of the laotian capital city's most prestigious locations at the top end of Lane Xang avenue. Surrounded by landmark monument Anou Savali (Vientiane's Arc de Triomphe), the Prime Minister's office and other ministerial buildings, the United Nations office is modern in design while roof structures and the entrance hall recall Lao traditional style. The overall construction pattern ensures constant natural cool air circulation, offices overlook a sumptuous landscaped patio filled with natural light and surrounded by shaded outdoor corridors. The building complies with strict environment and security standards. The project also included interior design and sourcing of office furniture.
The building concept did consider energy saving issues as natural light use for the office and exposed building facades protection toward sunbeams to decrease the wall heating. The design did use electrical aluminum louvers installed on the West exposed building facades which are allowing both sun heating and security protection. The project received the UNDP Green Department award for succeeding in this environment protection design concept.
