Luang Prabang UNESCO World Heritage NominationIn 1994, Francois Greck was commissioned by UNESCO to work in close collaboration with the Lao Ministry of Information and Culture towards Luang Prabang's nomination as a world heritage site. Ateliers de la Peninsule's task was to research the history of Luang Prabang's urban development, conduct extensive ground survey and establish a sound typology of the city's architectural identity. The outcome of this work was crucial in three respects: firstly it recommended 33 temples and 100 civilian buildings for world heritage status, secondly it defined the boundaries of the world heritage site within the city of Luang Prabang, and thirdly Ateliers de la Peninsule used this unique knowledge to draft the new urban regulations for construction and conservation in the heritage area. The splendour of Luang Prabang today and the number of visitors testify for the quality of Ateliers de la Peninsule's work. |
